The Barbells & Bullshit Tour
As Ian
approached his 30 year in the physical preparation
industry one of the major trends he believed was
unfolding was a willingness of persons in positions of
influence to provide misleading and in some cases
fraudulent information - and an acceptance by the masses
of this misguided content.
With no
intention of 'saving the world', Ian decided that it
would serve people in physical preparation to be given
an opportunity to lift the lid on this misleading and in
some cases deceitful information. If they benefited from
this exposure, great. If they chose to be the willing
recipient of poorly motivated content, great.
What
Ian seeks to teach through these seminars is that you
can and should form your own opinion, based on your
personal experiences, rather than accepting the trends
and dominant beliefs simply because everyone else does.
Learn
first hand from the most copied source of theories and
methods in the world of physical preparation, from the
coaches whose real-world solutions have
influenced and shaped the world of physical preparation.
The
World is Flat - at least that is what they said. Sure it
was many centuries ago but the same unwillingness to
explore the myths trap the modern person in the same way
as that myth all those years ago,
In this seminar Ian King will challenge your thinking in
a way that will result in you questioning what you are
told and have been led to believe in.
Relying on his 30 years in the industry, Ian will give
you insights to training theories and methods that you
may have previously taken for granted.
Ian will teach you his philosophies and way of viewing
training that has resulted in his association with
success in elite sport.
In this
seminar you will be exposed to concepts and theories
including:
* Why the body fat industry is fundamentally flawed
and what this means for the consumer.
*
That most of what most people do in their physical
training does more harm than good.
*
How injury prevention is only given lip service and the
incidence and severity of injury has not improved
despite all the technological improvements in so many
other areas.
*
How easy it is to prevent injuries - provided you are
willing to do what others may not be doing, and be
consistent and disciplined in your approach to training.
*
Why you need to account for every bit of energy you use,
raising the criteria for what is acceptable in anyone's
training program.
*
How the equipment and training methods used around the
world at any point in time are determined by commercial
interests, not the interests of the end user.
*
How instant gratification and other less than optimal
human traits are used to mislead your training and
ultimately prevent you from achieving long term
sustainable results.
It may
help you in your training decisions in ways you never
would have expected!
This seminar will serve both the end user as well as the
physical preparation professional.
How did you come to your
conclusions about how to train? Did you develop
these beliefs in an unbiased environment, free
of pressures to conform to certain ways of
thinking and doing? Or did you develop your
beliefs based on the influences and pressures
you have been exposed to? Have you ever stopped
to think about this? Why is it important? Do you
have a choice as to what to think and do? What’s
the best way to think and to? What is the price
to pay if I am nothing more than a collection of
other people’s opinions?
These are some of the
questions posed and answered in this ground
breaking program we have chosen to call
‘Barbells and Bullshit’.
The title was selected to ram
home the point that quite simply you are being
exposed to a lot of bullshit, and too much of it
is being absorbed.
Before you get concerned that
this is coming from a point of ‘holier than
thou’ you will be quickly reminded in this
program that what you choose to think and do is
your truth, your reality. And that is respected.
But is it really you? Or is it, and therefore
you, simply a collection of thoughts and actions
that are other people’s? Are you nothing but
yourself, or are you a collection of others? If
that is so, are you fulfilling your potential be
being little more than a collection of other
people’s thinking?
In pursuing these questions
and answers, we look into the way in which you
may be influenced in your thinking and doing,
and why these influences exist. We will talk
about religion, science, commercial gain,
short-term cash flow and ego – because for
reasons such as these most of us, at some stage
in our life and maybe still today, have had our
thinking shaped.
This program offers you a
life-line to become more of yourself, and to
fulfill your innate potential. If that is what
you want.
This is an important point
because the easiest thing for you to do is to be
what others what you to be. To go with the flow,
to hide amongst the masses, not stand out in any
way. It will take a lot more effort to thing
and do differently to the masses, and different
or even contrary to the dominant pressures and
influences in our industry, sub-culture and
broader society.
It is a reflection of the
broader choices in life we make between what we
may initially perceive as security versus
freedom. Those who seek the security of the
masses may soon learn that they really are not
free – not free to think for themselves, and not
free to do what they believe is the way to do
things in training. And they may soon learn
that this is also not a secure position, for
reasons including the continual change of trends
and therefore expectations on you to ‘be’ and
‘do’ continually changes things – at the whim of
others.
And those who seek to be free
face the reality that initially this not af
first feel secure, however as they progress in
this direction they may either flee back to
their prior perception of ‘security’, or soldier
on, finding that that they have more security in
this realm than those who they have left behind
have. The illusion of freedom and security may
not be all you initially think it is.
Influences on
program design
As we progress
down this journey of understanding how and why
you think and do what you do, and how you can do
it differently, we focus on practical real world
situation, including the influence you have when
you design your own program or design a program
for a client.
Influences on
exercise selection
As part of this we go deeper
into at least one aspect of program design and
that is how and why you select any given
strength exercise.
Influences on
training methods
We also take a
broader view and look at the dominant influences
and trend in training method and equipment.
Influences on
equipment selection
Within the area of
influencing on training methods, we focus on the
treatment of the physical quality flexibility,
putting on the table some thoughts that may
challenge you current values and beliefs.
Within this physical quality
an even more specific focus is placed on one
flexibility method, again potentially
threatening the values that you may been
influenced to adopt.
From there we go back to
strength training and look at the influences on
why and how strength exercises are taught.
In this seminar there is
additional content taking at least one specific
teaching model e.g. the squat, and digging
deeper into influences on how you teach this
exercise. Again, more challenges to your current
thinking perhaps.
How you learn and how you
choose your teachers is also discussed, and the
implications of this.
This content really exposes
on the 'bullshit' and the 'bull-shitter's' in
this industry.
Throughout
this seminar you will be exposed to the KSI way
of thinking, doing and teaching.
We will also discuss about
what the future may hold, as we approach the
watershed year of 2012.
Be ready to be
taken on a ride like you have never been on
before. Your thinking will be challenged, and
you will end up being the one doing the
challenging of your own mind.
This seminar is
aimed at the industry professional. Highly
committed end users will also receive value from
attending.
NB
This seminar is available only to those who attend the
B&BS one day seminar on Sat 10th July.
This is
your opportunity to spend a day learning from the coach
whose theories, methods and philosophies have had more
impact on the world of program design than any other one
person.
Here's
just some of Ian King's original and unique innovations,
the bulk of them published between 1989 and 1998:
*
recognition of the stretch-shortening cycle involvement
in strength training
*
the 3 digit speed timing (tempo) method
*
lines of movement (i.e. hip and quad dominant,
horizontal and vertical push and pull)
*
the division of exercises into unilateral/bilateral and
single joint/multiple joint following their allocation
into their respective lines of movement
*
the concept of family trees of exercises, and
progressions within the family trees
*
the integration of 'control' drills into the workout
prior to loading
*
the sequencing of abdominal exercises at the start of
the workout
*
balance of volume, sequence and intensity in training to
avoid injuries, and that conventional bodybuilding
programs contribute heavily to the onset of chronic
injuries due to their imbalances
*
the method of analyzing a training program to ascertain
balance
*
the method of analysis a training program to ascertain
total training time
*
the concept that external loading is over-rated and
there is no need for it until the individual has
mastered their own bodyweight
*
exercises such as the partial range co-contraction
lunge, the single leg stiff legged deadlift, the single
leg bent knee deadlift, the single leg hip-thigh
extension, the partial range single leg squat
*
the popularization of bodyweight exercises into
mainstream strength programs
*
the application of names to exercises introduced by
foreign coaches, including the Bulgarian squat, the
Romanian Deadlift
*
sayings such as 'time magnifies errors in training';
'all things being equal...';
*
holism and philosophy integrated into training
*
criticism of traditional periodization methods and
provision of alternative methods for all physical
qualities
...to
name a few.
Heard
of some of these somewhere before? No surprise, because
many of these are now in use around the world. In fact,
some 'authors' barely disguise their copying of these
concepts in their 'copyrighted' publications!
With 30
years of professional program design experience, and
having trained elite athletes than some can only dream
of - it is no wonder these highly effective methods have
resulted.
During
this day you will be exposed to the thinking and
strategies that generated the most influence program
design methods in the world.
