Ian believes that the first mistake coaches and athletes make is in their interpretation of endurance. Many perceive endurance as the isolated training of the heart and lungs. For Ian, endurance is another way of saying ‘work capacity’ and work capacity is created by the body as a whole – the muscles, nerves, levers, flexibility, etc. a narrow focus of training can deny the athlete the full development of their work capacity!
Understanding endurance and its training impact requires an understanding of the relationship between endurance and all the other dominant physical qualities.
