The case study is based on the Queensland Reds rugby union team competing in the southern hemisphere Super 12 Rugby Union Season. It has been kept for the most part under wraps for nearly a quarter of a century, in respect of the sensitive nature of the content. Sufficient time has passed now to share the story, and to provide more students of success in sport the opportunity to benefit from the lessons learnt and spoken about in this artifact.
The southern hemisphere Super 12 Rugby Union Season is one of the most arduous rugby competitions in the word, as it involves travel between three countries. The distance between South Africa and the other two countries – Australia and New Zealand – add a component of travel that no other rugby union competition in the world does. Therefore, this competition is an excellent subject to study, testing all team’s ability to train, travel, play and recover, over a six-month season (including pre- and post’ season).
The team involved, the Queensland Reds, had been the dominant team in the completion for most of the 1990s, before suffering a rapid decline from back-to-back champions in 1994 and 1995, to finishing a the bottom of the ladder in 1997. The author had been responsible for the entire team’s physical preparation from 1986 to 1996, before stepping aside for the 1996 and 1997 seasons, during which the team collapsed. The 1998 season presented the opportunity to return the team to its former glory as competition leaders.
Despite the passage of time, the lessons learnt and shared are as relevant today as they were then. The keys to success in winning in sports are known to few. A review of any sports competition history demonstrates this. This publication provides the reader with the opportunity to enhance their mastery of the keys to winning in sport.
Anyone wishing to enhance their understanding and competency in winning in sport will find value in this rare publication.
